What grade R U in??????????

So this is a typical question that we hear very often, being a homeschool family it makes me feel awkward. Its like when we go to the store and the cashier assumes by saying"Out of school today are we" No we are NOT we homeschool but often Zachary replies he goes to a private school, which is OK but then some folks will ask where. Why so many questions??????????The What Grade Are You In bothers me because WHY should we have to put a label on our children's grade level, that is one GREAT thing about homeschooling, for us that is.If you really sat in and helped teach at a local public school you will find out that NOT everyone of those students are at that level, they are NOT reading at the same level nor are they understanding their multiplication facts at the same level. This is just for the government to round up the children and put them into a little group with a name. NOT HERE...................My son has his own individual needs and he may be at one level in math but in another for reading or spelling.
When we first went to a homeschool used curriculum sale I asked a child what grade are you in and his mother simply replied we go by age and needs NOT the grade level and I said you know that makes so much sense, thanks to that unknown mother of all boys.

  1. I am understanding this way of thinking more and more myself. As I look at the girls strengths, some are at grade level and others are lower or high. I think there are too many labels in the world... period.

Hope you are doing well, Jamie. I think about you and your family often. (This is Robin from Little Rubies)

  2. I sympathize. Sadly, others just don't get it. Hope you are feeling well.

  3. I totally pick up what you are laying down my friend! We get this on a weekly basis..the eye rolls the surprised looks..."No school today?" etc...Zachary answers quickly, we are in school, homeschool....lol

Sometimes we meet other adults that were homeschooled that way, and other times just "oh that's nice"...

    Lol..

One of these days..I am going to say "oh, we dont believe in school..." and see the reactions...LOL

    Hang in there!
